VEGETATION INDICES Having quick access to vegetation health data is an indispensable complement to observations in the field, and the results can make or break a harvest. Although an aerial overview alone could help farmers visualize potential problems in their plots, utilising analyses based on multispectral imagery can be much more helpful in understanding variability in the field throughout different growing seasons.

MastaCam provide large numbers of multispectral images which are stitched together to form NVDI maps where each pixel on the map is assigned values depending on their spectral signature. NVDI maps can help reveal critical information about plant health, soil conditions, and irrigation.

NDVI is the most commonly-used vegetation index and gives insight into the chlorophyll content of plants. It accounts for variations in soil background brightness and moisture conditions, especially in areas of low vegetation cover, and is also sensitive to atmospheric effects of aerosols.

AERIAL PERSPECTIVES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL While traditional agriculture service providers often incorporate satellite-based vegetation health data into the overall assessment, the availability of usable data is completely dependent on the type of professional services that the farm has access to, and favorable weather conditions: clear skies only for the satellite data to be usable. Drones provide a flexible alternative to acquiring multispectral data that is not only of a much higher resolution but is also more consistent across growing seasons. It’s also important to keep in mind the accuracy of your aerial maps, which is often described using Ground Sample Distance, or GSD – the distance between the centers of two consecutive pixels on a map. The smaller the GSD the higher the resolution and accuracy. A commercial satellite can have a GSD of around 30 m/pixel, while a drone can produce a GSD as small as 3 cm/pixel.

Your PCC or appointed Quinquennial Inspector may recommend or request the use of Drones / UAV's to get the most difficult to reach aspects of the QI completed, and this is where MastaCam can help.

Drones (or UAV's) can make a significant contribution to the QI without the need for ladders, or expensive access equipment, providing high resolution images and video for both outside and inside the church buildings, and will form an important part of the photographic and video evidence for the QI.

In addition these high resolution images will help the PCC and QI when tendering for and briefing constructors for remedial or maintenance work to be completed, and result in a more accurate quote during the tender phase.

These images can then form part of the Church's main report and logged for future reference and to monitor change over time.

Of course you don't need to wait for the QI! As part of your annual check or  inspecting any specific element of the building e.g. gutters, this can be a quick and safe job, and will help you keep on top of the maintenance programme for your buildings.

We will conduct the necessary pre-flight safety surveys, check airspace restrictions and ensure neighbours are notified of the proposed flight before we even spin a rotor!

And of course we are extremely mindful of the environment and location, and work hard to keep noise and any disturbance to an absolute minimum.
